Since ancient times, expansion of territories has always been important for rulers and history has been a witness to several great wars due to this. Larger territories meant larger power to the emperor of those regions and greater authorities to the reigning royals. They proved their mettle to the other regions by showing off their extended boundaries.

A similar jewel has been encrusted in the University’s crown. The University, being a new budding centre for various educational studies, has added another feather to its cap. This feather is the extension of the University’s campus area.

Talking of the new achievement of the University, it is a happy occasion to announce that the foundation stone of the University’s East Delhi campus was laid down on the 14th of December and that too by the hands of our new Union HRD Minister, Mrs. Smriti Zubin Irani. This ceremony marked an event that is believed to be as significant for the contemporary landscape of this region as it is historic. Mrs. Irani laid the cornerstone for the 18.75 acre campus of GGSIPU in the Surajmal Vihar area of the East Delhi region. The Rs. 285 Crore campus will be equipped with modern facilities including solar power panels and geo-thermal cooling systems, which will reflect the urbanized and modern outlook of the university management along with their awareness towards the ecological system. The campus is planned to be built on the lines of the ‘National Institute of Design’ in Ahmedabad. The area campus will include a ‘School of Planning and Architecture’ and also a ‘School of Design’.

The ceremony was held in the gracious presence of both the HRD minister and the BJP member & MP from East Delhi Mr. Mahesh Giri. Both the eminent personalities praised the University for its Role in modern day education and the recognition it has received since its establishment in 1998. In the words of the honourable minister herself, “East Delhi has waited too long for an educational institution like this. The campus will fulfill the needs of the students residing here.” She also demanded that the campus which at present has proposed the hostel facility for 300 boys and 200 girls should either provide the facility for 300 boys and 300 girls equally or make it 300 girls and 200 boys. Mrs. Smriti Irani said that a memorandum of understanding between the campus and the East Delhi Municipal Corporation(EDMC) will be signed soon, under which the students will be able to work with the civic body during their 3rd year.

Mr. Giri too claimed that this is the first university campus of East Delhi. He emphasized on the 40 percent youth population of East Delhi which is highest as compared to the rest of the city, and said that a university campus like this was the need of today. He said that East Delhi is considered as the most backward region and has longed for progress for years, and was happy that this would be the first campus where 80% students would belong to Delhi only.
