Physician, academic, researcher, statesman, thinker, author, editor, columnist, broadcaster and health science communicator, Prof. (Dr.) Yatish Agarwal is a nationally known figure in the realm of medical science and literature. A senior professor at New Delhi’s 3,000-bedded Union Government flagship medical institution, Safdarjung Hospital and Vardhman Mahavir Medical College, he carries a vast teaching experience of more than thirty-four years and has shepherded thousands of undergraduate and more than a hundred postgraduate medical students through their doctoral and post-doctoral research first in the University of Delhi and since 2008 in Guru Gobind Singh Indraprastha University.
Beginning his medical career as a MBBS student in 1976 in University of Delhi, he did his MD in Radiodiagnosis from University of Delhi. In 1997, he was awarded D.Sc. for his path-breaking and seminal contribution to science writing and communication. He was Fellow with Foundation of Detection of Early Gastric Carcinoma, Tokyo in 1998, and was a WHO Fellow in 2005 at Mahidol University, Thailand. He was awarded a second D.Sc. for his work in Community Medicine in 2022.
Dr. Agarwal has served a number of national and international public institutions and educational bodies in several capacities. He has been a consultant to the World Health Organization India Office, advisor to National Board of Examinations, Elsevier Science, Wolters Kluwer, Lippincott Academy of Clinical Excellence, Ministry of Science & Technology, Ministry of Human Resource Development, Ministry of Culture, Ministry of Earth Sciences, Union Public Service Commission, and a number of Indian universities.
Prof. Agarwal has a penchant both for hardcore technical research publications and equally for popular writing, fiction and poetry. He has authored fifty books, many of them bestsellers. Some of his works can be found in a number of languages. His books have sold more than 2.5 million copies. Dr. Agarwal’s health columns have appeared regularly since 1981 in a number of leading national dailies and periodicals. His articles have been published in The Indian Express, Hindustan Times, Deccan Chronicle, Asian Age, Manorama Year Book, Reader’s Digest, India Today, Swagat, Femina, Caravan, Woman’s Era, Weekend Review, Sunday Mail, Hindustan, Kadambini, Saptahik Hindustan, Jansatta, Rashtriya Sahara, Amar Ujala and Navbharat Times since 1980. He has scripted and anchored a number of television series and radio shows.
Prof. (Dr.) Yatish Agarwal has been bestowed with several prestigious national awards. He is a recipient of the 1999 National Science and Technology Award, Government of India; the 1999 Atmaram Award of Ministry of Human Resource Development, Government of India; the 2001 Shiksha Award of Ministry of Human Resource Development, Government of India; the 2002 Meghnad Saha Award of Ministry of Science & Technology, Government of India; the 2003 Indian Science Writers’ Association Lifetime Achievement Award; the 2003 Hindi Akademi’s Litterateur Award; the 2004 Indian Council of Medical Research Award; the 2006 Indira Gandhi Award, Ministry of Home Affairs, Government of India; the 2005 Rajiv Gandhi Gyan-Vigyan Award, Ministry of Home Affairs, Government of India; the Centenary Award of Vigyan Parishad, Allahabad in 2013; the Vigyan Bhushan Award of the Uttar Pardesh Hindi Sansathan in 2014; and the Hindi Akademi Gyan Prodyogiki Sahitya Samman in 2019.
