Dr Varun Joshi is a Professor (Environmental Geology), and is
presently Dean University School of Environment Management, GGS
Indraprastha University, Dwarka, New Delhi.
He did his M.Sc. and PhD in
Geology from HNB Garhwal University, Srinagar (Garhwal), Uttarakhand
(a Central University). Cumulatively, he has more than 32 years of
research and teaching experience. He
joined GGSIP University in the year 2010. Prior to joining GGSIPU he
has worked in GB Pant National Institute of Himalayan Environment &
Sustainable Development (An autonomous institute of Ministry of
Environment, Forest and Climate Change, Govt. of India) for about
nineteen years. Prof. Joshi has extensively worked on various
environmental issues, and natural hazards of western and
north-eastern Himalayas.
Prof. Joshi is a highly accomplished environmental geologist and
has worked on various aspect of geological environmen,
Watershed Management, Climate Change with special reference to the
Himalayan region, Cryosphere, Environmental Impact Assessment,
and Natural Disaster Management etc.
Prof. Joshi has also been
a member of High Level
committee on 'Past Flood and Landslides in the Upper Alaknanda
valley' (Ministry of Agriculture (GoI), Member of Task team for
'Snow and Glaciers' (MoEFCC ,GoI), and member of the team of
Experts for 'Uttarakashi Landslide' (DST-GoI).
Dr Joshi has attended various International
and National training programs on environmental aspects of
Himalaya. He has also participated as an expert member of the
team of
Mountain
Risk Engineering (MRE) study tour to China (MoEFCC)-ICIMOD,
Nepal). Prof. Joshi has also visited many countries to hone his
professional skills, and also as an expert member.
Prof. Joshi has successfully carried out many externally funded
international and national research projects on different
environmental issues specifically for the Himalayan region.
He is member/expert of Board of Studies and Scientific
committees of various universities/institutions besides being a
member of several professional societies. Besides contributing as
a researcher par excellence, he is also providing his services as
Program Coordinator NSS/NCC of the University. Prof. Joshi's has
published more than one hundred sixty scientific papers in
international and national journals of repute. In addition, he
has also published four edited books. Several students completed
their Ph D under his supervision and also supervised M Sc (EM and
NRM) and MBS (DM) students for their dissertation thesis.
Currently 8 students are pursuing Ph D under
hissupervision.
