A Workshop to Polish Writing Skills

  â€œEither write something worth reading or do something worth writing” -Benjamin Franklin.

The above quote accurately describes the writing workshop organized by the Placement Cell in USMC. This two day workshop was organized for the final year USMC students of all specializations, be it Journalism, New Media, Corporate Communication or Television Production. The main objective of this workshop was to enhance and nurture the reading and writing skills of the students.

Mrs. Kumud Mohan, an experienced author, freelance writer and photojournalist attached to SPAN, SWAGAT, UNICEF, UNDP, TOI Group, HT and many more, was the distinguished guest invited to address the students. The workshop started at 11:00am in the USMC department. During the first half, the students were taught about the basic principles of writing, characteristics of a good writer and what a good write up is about. After that, the students were asked to read articles, features written by the guest to increase their knowledge and also work on their pronunciation skills.

Students were corrected wherever needed and tips were also given to most of the students. “I read a travel diary written by Kumud ma’am. It not only made me realize how a travelogue is written but also how our vocabulary differs from the one used in that feature. It was a very helpful exercise”, said Surbhi Jain, student of USMC.

After lunch, in the second half of the day, a quiz competition was organized for the students which majorly dealt with questions from history, general knowledge and current affairs. The winners were given gifts brought by Mrs. Mohan. All the participants participated in the quiz enthusiastically. Though the workshop was scheduled to be a two day event, due to the approaching practical examinations, the second day of the workshop was rescheduled to 9th December 2014.
